Twenty elite ultra-marathoners and ironman distance triathletes performed a maximal graded exercise test and a 180 min submaximal run at 64% VO2max on a treadmill to determine metabolic responses. One group habitually consumed a traditional high-carbohydrate (HC: n = 10, %carbohydrate:protein:fat = 59:14:25) diet, and the other a low-carbohydrate (LC; n = 10, 10:19:70) diet for an average of 20 months (range 9 to 36 months).

Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) chemically related to indomethacin and tolmetin. Ketorolac tromethamine is a racemic mixture of [-]S- and [+]R-enantiomeric forms, with the S-form having analgesic activity. Its antiinflammatory effects are believed to be due to inhibition of both cylooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cylooxygenase-2 (COX-2) which leads to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis leading to decreased formation of precursors of prostaglandins and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. The resultant reduction in prostaglandin synthesis and activity may be at least partially responsible for many of the adverse, as well as the therapeutic, effects of these medications. Analgesia is probably produced via a peripheral action in which blockade of pain impulse generation results from decreased prostaglandin activity. However, inhibition of the synthesis or actions of other substances that sensitize pain receptors to mechanical or chemical stimulation may also contribute to the analgesic effect. In terms of the ophthalmic applications of ketorolac - ocular administration of ketorolac reduces prostaglandin E2 levels in aqueous humor, secondary to inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis.

Ketoconazole is a racemic mixture consisting of cis-(2S,4R)-(−) and cis-(2R,4S)-(+) enantiomers.[5] The cis-(2S,4R) isomer was more potent in inhibiting progesterone 17α,20-lyase than its enantiomer (IC50 values of 0.05 and 2.38 μM, respectively) and in inhibiting 11β-hydroxylase (IC50 values of 0.152 and 0.608 μM, respectively). Both isomers were relatively weak inhibitors of human placental aromatase.[4]
Early studies reported high success rates; in one study in 1925, 60% of patients became seizure-free, and another 35% of patients had a 50% reduction in seizure frequency. These studies generally examined a cohort of patients recently treated by the physician (a retrospective study) and selected patients who had successfully maintained the dietary restrictions. However, these studies are difficult to compare to modern trials. One reason is that these older trials suffered from selection bias, as they excluded patients who were unable to start or maintain the diet and thereby selected from patients who would generate better results. In an attempt to control for this bias, modern study design prefers a prospective cohort (the patients in the study are chosen before therapy begins) in which the results are presented for all patients regardless of whether they started or completed the treatment (known as intent-to-treat analysis).[19]

You should not use ketorolac if you have any active or recent bleeding (including bleeding inside your body), a head injury, a stomach ulcer, severe kidney disease, a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder, a history of severe allergic reaction to aspirin or an NSAID, if you are scheduled to have surgery, if you are in late pregnancy, or if you are breast-feeding a baby.
I hadn’t tried the bulletproof coffee with Almond milk but it’s GREAT. I don’t use quite as much of the Almond milk, maybe 1/4 cup but it sure adds flavour to the coffee, which was already great. I like the less butter and MCT oil idea as I have gall stones and can’t always handle the 1 Tbsp of each but the 1 tsp. makes it perfect without the risk of a gall bladder attack. In a counter mixer (i cant afford a bukket i got a 9 dollar walmart one) add 1 egg, 2oz cream cheese, 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream, dash salt, dash vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1 scoop protein powder and blend. I mix mine up with Quest peanut butter powder and add cocoa powder. Or I do 1/4 cup no sugar added canned apples and cinnamon and pecans and then mix with quest salted caramel protein powder. Quest is sweet enough I never add sweetener but depends on your powder you use. Best pancakes ever cooked in butter. Eat with bacon and you will never miss regular pancakes!

I only had one problem with this recipe, and it was a big one… I didn’t double the batch!! Thank you so much for this! I missed chili so much! I had a recipe I always used to make pre-keto and I absolutely loved it. But this is up there. Next time I’ll definitely double it and add some green chiles and maybe a little sweetener since I love the slight sweetness mixed with the spicy. This is a keeper 🙂
I am a reluctant cook and baker however since switching over to Keto woe I have been baking a lot more. I made these today and they taste incredible. So yummy. I often make substitutions and hope for the best. I did substitute a few things here and they still turned out great. I can’t eat anything with sugar alcohol so finding a great sugar substitute was a challenge. I have been using Kakato sugar substitute and it worked great. For the filling I only used 1/2 cup instead of 3/4. I also did not have lemon zest or fresh lemons. I used non-GAO lemon juice—8 tablespoons and it tastes fantastic. For those that asked about type of butter….I always use Kerrygold or another grass-fed butter. I also baked the crust for 5 extra minutes since it was still so wet. I also baked the entire dish for 5 extra minutes. The crust was awesome due to the buttery crunch with the extra baking. I hope this helps other novice bakers out there.
In general, people on ketogenic diets tend to consume a lot of foods high in monounsaturated and saturated fats such as olive oil, butter (often butter from grass-fed cows is recommended), avocado, and cheeses. The high oleic types of safflower and sunflower oils (but not the regular forms of these oils) are also good choices, as they are high in monounsaturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats.
Similar to the BHB salts and MCT’s from the KETO//OS I discuss above, powdered forms of ketones are excellent if you don’t want to completely eliminate carbohydrates or protein (which can be gluconeogenic when eaten in excess) or eat copious amounts of fats, but want to simultaneously maintain high levels of blood ketones. Prior to your response, I did make a cheesecake, using your recipe for the filling (so delish, and I received all favorable comments on it). Due to the cost difference between almond and coconut flour, I did find a recipe similar to the one you shared in your response, 1/2 C melted butter (1 stick) whisked until fully blended with 2 eggs, 1/4 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp vanilla. Then slowly mix in 3/4 C sifted coconut flour. Kneaded for about a minute, adding coconut flour until not sticky. I simply then pressed crust into only the bottom portion of the springform pan, used a fork to punch multiple holes in it, then baked at 400° for 10 minutes. I let it fully cool before adding filling, then used your perfect instructions to bake the cheesecake. Love, love, love this recipe. I’m a happy Type-II Diabetic!

When I first embarked on a low carb diet, cheesecake was among the first keto dessert recipes I ever tried to make and it was as good as any conventional version out there.
Very new to this low carb thing and have loved your site for ideas–thank you for all of your hard work! I made these pancakes this morning adding a little bit of lemon juice and vanilla and served with butter and a little bit of sugar free all natural raspberry jelly and fresh berries. They were delicious! They seemed very fragile though so I’m not sure how they would work as a wrap for sandwich fixings.

Hey Libby, I just want to thank you for your amazing recipes… The best one of all would be the one minute keto mug bread, which I used as like the toasted base for like a ketofied eggs Benedict and honestly… I felt like I was eating at a restaurant!! And I also tweaked your recent cupcake recipe to include cocoa powder and I was amazed at how I actually felt satisfied after just one or two at the end of a meal and I happen to have a bottomless pit for a stomach, so that is nothing short of a miracle😂

I’m new but can’t wait to use these amazing recipes. Can I use these gram cracker cookies to make a cruse for a baked cheese cake and if so would I just use melted butter like the regular crust calls for.? It is really hard to go through every recipe to go through each ingredient to change from metric to us measurements. Please put something more user friendly for us because I want to make all your recipes. It is hard enough following a new recipe let alone looking up each item.
I topped mine with sugar free raspberry preserves and sugar free syrup. I use Walton Farms for the syrup and Smuckers (I think) for the preserves. I also experimented on one pancake with some sugar free mini-chocolate chips. Everything about this recipe is a win and they cooked perfectly for me with a pre-heated skillet and letting the batter rest.

I followed the recipe to a tee, used all recommended ingredients. I’ve attempted making it twice, the first time I didn’t have a food processor and that was a complete fail. The second time, today, I bought a food processor and attempted it again. The egg whites were fluffy but never got to stiff peaks… maybe my eggs were too cold? Anyway, I baked for 30 mins, and it wasn’t even golden brown on the top so I didn’t put the foil on time and cooked it another 20 mins. I just pulled it out about 20 mins ago and it is golden brown. However, it is a very moist almost like a banana bread texture. I just popped it back in the oven hoping it will “dry up”. Any recommendations? Do I need to cook for and hour ?
I am so upset with this recipe… I followed this recipe exactly put the eggs cream cheese and vanilla and  the 1 Tb water in my vitamix then added the dry ingredients and it was a crumbly mess and NOT liquid AT ALL !!… I added 1 more egg thinking my 2 eggs weren’t lrg enough but that did little to nothing .. I ended up having to add hwc and more water to just get it to the consistency of pourable batter ., however the batter now would not let me flip them w/o them completely falling apart.. What the heck…your recipe states 1 Tb of water how can batterbe made  with 1 Tb liquid with 2/3 cup flour … SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY WRONG

To cut the eggy taste in low carb bread I was told by someone to BEAT eggs & milk together, & it worked wonderfully…..BUT since there isn’t any milk called for in this recipe you can’t do that. So, I’m wondering if it would work to use 2 eggs, instead of 3, & then add about 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream to beat the eggs in before adding the other ingredients? The moisture content should be about the same, & the HWCwould be thicker than using water or milk. Might be worth a try.

I tried the keto diet a couple years ago and about 6 weeks in of following it closely I started having significant episodes of lightheadedness and anxiety like symptoms. The coach I was working with said it was keto flu so I continued on the diet for a couple more weeks but it was making life difficult so I stopped. Now every time I try to go low carb the symptoms come back. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just anxiety response or all in my head. I would love to eat low carb but haven’t ever been able to figure out why this happens. I read somewhere that keto can be harder for women’s bodies and affect their adrenal glands. Would this increase anxiety symptoms.
Yes! Originally I thought I misread the directions. I also feel 1/4 cup is too much. I talked to some friends and they were surprised about the amount. I made this two nights ago. My daughter wouldn’t eat it and I added sour cream to calm it down. I took it to work hoping others will enjoy it. Ketoconazole has not been shown to be safe or effective for these uses. Talk to your doctor about using ketoconazole for your condition.
Hi Ben great science & sound advice. May I share with the group? I’m 42, in australia, have been an alcoholic for 10 yrs. In April 2016 I gave up drinking & started living strictly ketogenic. In 3 months I dropped 25 kilos. I have cheated on weekends but I go through a fast of sorts on Mondays to get back into ketosis by Tues. I work afternoon / evenings so I wake at 10.30am take a pre workout drink with raspberry ketones & a splash of mct oil & all my vitamins as well. I then do weights for an hr then get ready to go to work. I take 2 800ml protein shakes consisting of 20 ml mct & 30grm amino enhanced protein. I work in warehousing so I walk anywhere between 10 km & 5 km a nite. I feel great all the time, thanks largely to your research & advice. If have any thoughts or opinions I’d love hear them.

I was a little freaked! lol … I am new to Keto and I must say that I have been a little frustrated because I started this new keto lifestyle since the second week of February and I’ve been loosing and gaining the same freakin 5 lbs! It depends Laura – if you’re full keto then you’ll want that fat to offset the protein, but if you’re not on a ketogenic diet then you can remove some of it to keep the calories down. It also depends on how lean the meat is that you start with – I usually use 80/20 which provides some fat but it’s not completely swimming in it like it would be if you used 73/27. If you start with a 90/10 you won’t have to drain it at all. Hope that helps! :)

This is the best keto bread I have ever made! By far! My bread was a little flat, but I think my baking powder needs to be replaced. I did make two substitutions with this recipe. I replaced egg whites with whole eggs, and ghee with coconut oil. Everything else, I already had on hand. I will definitely make this again and play with it a little. Really delicious bread.
I started drinking coffee blended with butter and coconut oil for breakfast over a year ago. I loved it. Then about six months ago, I decided I wanted to go even healthier and started making it with match green tea instead of the coffee. I have a slightly sluggish thyroid and thought maybe less caffeine would be beneficial with that. My question is, what type of blender do people use for this? I have gone thru two Nutribullets and recently bought a Ninja blender. In reading the directions for the Ninja, it says in several places not to use hot liquids. In hindsight, I think that is probably why I went thru two Nutribullets in less than a year. Now I am using an immersion blender, but it doesn’t make it very frothy, plus it is messier. Any suggestions? For me, one of the joys of my morning beverage is the hotter the better, so I don’t want to let it cool before blending. Thanks.

I am a huge cheesecake lover but, like you, hate to bake one and have that temptation in my kitchen.So I baked it yesterday and followed the baking instructions, not a good result. Two minutes in my microwave produced a very over-cooked, dried out product. Today I tried it again, on 50% power, for about 80 seconds. Perfect! This will be a keeper! Thank you!
Meanwhile, beat the remaining 1 cup (236 mL) of heavy cream using a hand mixer with a whisk attachment on High for about 2-3 minutes, until stiff peaks form. It's ready when you see a pronounced trail from the whisk on the surface of the cream, and the mixture doesn't pour out when you tilt the bowl. Do NOT overmix, you want barely stiff peaks but not extremely stiff.

good advice and good information :) (i do use the real whipped cream in a can though on the occasion that im too lazy to whip my own… usually when i make coffee with lots of coconut oil and dont feel like whipping, the foamy cream on top keeps the oil slick from feeling too gnarly lol. But the important thing is being aware and factoring it in! So good job on keeping it real so no one wonders what happened after their fourth giant frappe with whipped cream ;)

Hello. I am very impressed with your blog and can’t wait to try the cream cheese pancakes. Because of having to watch my carbs, protein and fat levels established from the Keto Calculator that you link to, I plug all of my foods into My Fitness Pal. When I plugged in the cream cheese pancake recipe, I got a different carb count than you have listed. When it’s close I just assume different brands of items but mine was a net 5 carbs. The protein was close at 16 but the fat came out to 23. It’s fairly easy for me to keep the net carb count low but I really have to watch the protein level. Maybe you can share where you go to calculate your numbers??
While many, if not most, recipes are difficult to alter to a ketogenic version, we have found that concocting (and even finding) a legitimate keto-friendly chili to be especially challenging. More often than not, the protein gets a little out of control in its ratio to fat, and the net carbs are also unusually high in most chili recipes. However, we have devised one that fits into (or very close to) the ideal macronutrient range. This chili is easy enough to prepare for a beginner cook to prepare, and the flavor of the finished product is superb!

It just needed a bit more structure, so for trial number three I split the difference, using half coconut flour and half almond flour. There’s a reason they say the third time’s a charm. This was the perfect blend. The bread was moist but firm enough to hold its shape, and it didn’t taste like coconut. After that, I began experimenting: hazelnut flour worked great, and cheese and scallions added great flavor.
These were delicious but I was disappointed because when I inputted the ingredients and their amount into My Fitness Pal app and created the recipe it said each cookie (I made 20 out of the exact recipe) was 10g Carbs. I followed the recipe and only swapped Swerve Granular and used a whole egg. But that’s not enough to adjust a carb count by 7g per cookie. So I’m confused. I used 3 cups unblanched almond flour and that’s where the majority of carbs are in this recipe. Any insight would be appreciated!

The drinks are the easy part, do you have a diet plan that is good for someone that hits the gym hard 4-5 days a week for and hour and half. 45 min weights and 30-45 min cardio? What does it mean to be on a ketogenic (often shortened to “keto”) diet? When you’re on a keto diet, you consume a very low-carb, high-fat diet. If you try it, please let us know how it went and if it still stayed soft. You can also stir several times during the freezing process, which breaks up ice crystals and helps when making ice cream without an ice cream maker.

My personal preference when it comes to zero-sugar sweeteners is Swerve. I’ve found some sugar alcohols to be unfavorable to my digestive system, but Swerve seems to do just fine! For me, Swerve tastes closest to actual sugar without that sugar alcohol flavor. Other great sweetener options are Stevia, Monk Fruit Sweetener,  Erythritol, and Xylitol.
I don’t buy Swerve in bulk, but in my experience the price for 12-oz bags is always lower at Vitacost than Amazon, and Vitacost offers free shipping with a minimum order. They carry so many keto/LC staples that it’s pretty easy to make the free shipping minimum. I like to get our Lily’s chocolate there too. WOW…these are SO good! I made them and ate some about an hour ago, and I could do it all over again! (That’s because we shared and each only had 2 pancakes) I pureed some strawberries with a touch of agave instead of syrup, and these were to die for. These were delicious! I mixed everything up in a small blender (think Nutrabullet) and everything fit. Added a bit of flavored stevia liquid drops, and a dash more cinnamon! Mmm! I did not have the 3” rings, but this recipe produced 4 large pancakes (6” diameter) that still rose nicely – better than many cream cheese pancake recipes I have tried! Not sure if it was due to the baking powder or coconut flour? Any who, I will definitely purchase the rings because I can then use them for eggs! Many people take MCT oil and exogenous ketones when they start a Keto diet in order to boost their ketone levels. However, if you’re unused to taking these Keto supplements, then they can cause you to have the runs pretty badly. So make sure to start with a small amount at first (a few grams of ketone salts per day OR 1/2 teaspoon of MCT oil). And then gradually increase your intake as your stomach adjusts to it.
There are studies that have shown sugar has the same effect on our bodies and brains as cocaine and heroine!1 The same areas of the brain are activated when one eats sugar as when one ingests cocaine. In addition, when we eat sugar, our brain sends messages for the release of dopamine, the “feel good” hormone. After some time, the release of dopamine is more or less regulated and less is sent out each time we eat sugar. The absence of large amounts of dopamine triggers our need to want more sugar, to get that same “feel good” feeling back. Coincidentally, drug addiction is exactly that. The brain remembers what made it feel good, even if you don’t- cravings aren’t random.

I made this loaf for the first time today and I’m happy with the result. It does taste a little eggy but when you are craving something that resembles bread this loaf does the trick. I toasted a piece and that was okay to eat as well. The only change I made to the recipe was to NOT use the food processor – just mixed egg yolks, almond flour etc together by hand and folded in the egg whites. I used a loaf pan 25 x 13 cm and was able to cut 15 slices. Intend to make again.
Made this for the first time tonight, excellent! I read the comments before I started so I knew to beat the eggs well and drain the beef. Thank you to everyone who commented! I didn’t use pickles, instead I put a few dots of sweet relish on top of the beef/bacon layer then spread them out a bit. Not so keto friendly but there isn’t much in a portion and it’s much quicker than dealing with pickles. Hubby asked me what I thought of it as he went for seconds. I quite enjoyed this and he did too! I had much more beef than called for, I used all 3 eggs and beat them well before the whipping cream and yellow mustard went in.There was no eggy taste. I will definitely make this again!

I found this blog because of this recipe! My family needed something new and I (being pregnant) NEEDED pancakes! I saw how simple it was and I already had everything so I said why not (after my failed attempt with coconut flour donuts and pancakes). My family went bananas for them!! I then started playing with the recipe as if they were crepes. It is now a staple in our home!

This cheesecake tastes amazing! I made it for the first time yesterday, and the hardest part was waiting for it to cool. I did modify the recipe slightly; I only used 20 ounces (2 1/2 packs) of cream cheese just because I was mixing them one block at a time and it seemed to be plenty enough for the entire cheesecake at 2 1/2. I then used half of the batter to make the cheesecake in a pie plate and used the other half to make 24 mini crustless cheesecakes. I still used the same amount of sweetener for the filling because I like my cheesecake on the sweeter side. I loved the crust as well. I made a strawberry topping and it tasted very similar to a cheesecake biscuit with jelly. The next time I can get my hands on dairy-free cream cheese, I will make it with that. Only issue I had was the springform pan I used leaked some butter into the dutch oven. Perhaps I used a little too much or my almonds weren’t ground finely enough. I may try 6oz of almond flour next time instead. The adults seemed to enjoy it for the most part and it made one little girl happy because every other dessert served that night had gluten and this was something she could eat. 🙂
